The Canalside Heritage Centre is focused on the history of Beeston Lock and the Nottingham and Beeston Canal and tells an important story about trade, travel, industrialisation, and homes of the past. The Weir cottages are the home to our heritage centre, which we have worked hard to transform into a lively hub of community activity. Originally, there were four cottages (later converted into one house), which were inhabited from the mid-eighteenth century. These cottages have been home to artists, gamekeepers, servants, coal miners, carpenters, blacksmiths and much more. The cottages were last inhabited in 1996 before falling into disuse. Today, after a Heritage Lottery funded renovation project, the site brings you stories about the Beeston Ryland’s canalside community and invites visitors to share in the heritage of the Weir Cottages. We have an activity room where we hold community and learning sessions, a tearoom, community gardens, on-site apiary, and exhibition space
We provide formal learning workshops for Key Stage 1 and Key stage 2 groups. We are also happy to deliver sessions in an outreach capacity. Please contact the centre on 0115 922 1773 or email schools@canalsideheritagecentre.org.uk for bookings or further information.
